Get your tissues ready, because this book is heart-wrenching to the nth degree. Eventually, life-affirming, yeah ... but heart-wrenching. You.Have.Been.Warned.
The mind does amazing things to keep itself sane and intact, and in Roman's case it caused him to forget and deny his first (and only) love Leo and to repress his sexuality. The two boys fall in love when they were 16, and they dream of a life together away from their families, but life isn't always a fairy tale ... and is often a nightmare. Twelve years after Roman's nightmare, he meets Leo by accident and all the feelings, all the desires, all the terror returns.
There's a lot of anger on Leo's part towards Roman, and Roman initially burrows into that denial and repression, but once Roman starts believing his truth, it's an agonizing but affirming process as the two build on the solid foundation of love they shared as boys and work to strengthen it in their adulthood.
Leo and Roman's chemistry is so powerful and there are several sizzling sex scenes, but this is no light romance novel. At times, Leo and Roman's yearning for one another is almost overwhelming. I don't want to give too many details because the way it all unfolds is so beautifully done. I also appreciated how Riley Hart notes that she consulted with several psychologists to review the story for authenticity. The story definitely kept my interest every step of the way, and the epilogue beautifully shows their growth together toward their HEA. 4.5 stars for this powerful story.
