Ooh, I love this lovely tale of two middle-aged men who find love together. To counteract his staid job as a "stuffy, button-up accountant," 48-year-old Declan - who happens to have full sleeves of "bright and richly colored tattoos of floral mosaics covering each inch of bare skin" - rents a studio to create stop-motion video featuring puppets he has carefully crafted. Shota - "the most perfect human east of the Hudson River"- is the receptionist at the studio and the object of Declan's obsession.

Their romance is slow and tentative and there's little in the way of on-page grappling, but the chemistry absolutely sparks between Shota and Declan, and I absolutely adore how C.S. Poe writes. Here is Declan about Shota: "The lines of age were hard to pinpoint, but there was character to the muscles in his face as he smiled. Character that simply wasn't there in someone younger ...." And:
I craved human contact. It'd been a long time since I'd had anything intimate, like Shota's kisses. Anything gentle, like his caresses. But it wasn't that I needed those physical acts of appreciation from just anyone because it'd been too long. I needed them from someone my heart tripped over in return. I needed them from Shota Watanabe.
Overall, a beautifully created gem of a holiday novella. 5 stars and a Recommended Read for "Love in 24 Frames."
