The author notes that “Catching Chance” could be read as a standalone, but personally I would recommend reading "Chasing Chance" first to get the background of Chance and Andy’s romance. While the first book ends with Chance and Andy realizing they love one another, “Catching Chance” is all about Chance coming to terms with coming out and believe me, it’s a rocky road.

Chance loves Andy, and truly wants to be with him, and their romance and growing relationship feels real and honest. I especially like the community that takes Chance to their heart – Andy’s friends Cam, Jordy and Ben as well as Chance’s team mate Travis and his girlfriend – and I love their coming out party for Chance.

Their relationship seems solid … except when they venture out into the real world. The path to really being together is a long (very long) and agonizing one for Chance. Chance wants to come out, but when confronted with friends and/or football fans, Chance is more than willing to leap back into that closet and pretend that Andy is just a friend.

At almost 50% longer than the first book (175 pages vs. 252), the pace of this story is slow, too slow in my opinion. We get Andy and Chance’s POV in alternating chapters, often with the POV changing mid-scene which draws out the scene even longer. And maybe it is just me, but at times it is difficult to figure out exactly whose POV we are getting.

I continue to find these characters interesting, and while it takes a long time, I like where Chance and Andy find themselves at the end of “Catching Chance.” Also I like the excerpt at the end of the book giving us the beginning of Cam’s story. However, the pacing of “Catching Chance” was a HUGE miss for me. 3.5 stars.
